Headaches Q & A

What are headaches?

Headaches are a type of pain condition that affects the head or face. The pain may be mild and dull or severe and sharp. You may rarely experience head pain, or your headaches may be a recurring problem.

Though headaches aren’t always a serious medical concern, if you have recurring head pain or neck pain that affects your quality of life, the team at AABP Integrative Pain Care can help.

What are common types of recurring headaches?

There are many types of headaches. Common recurring headaches include:

Tension-type headache (TTH)

A TTH is the most common type of headache. These types of headaches develop from tension in the muscles in your head, neck, or upper back, causing mild to moderate pain. If you have 15 or more TTHs a month, you have chronic TTH.

Migraines

Migraines are recurring headaches that cause a pulsing sensation in the head. This pain may be moderate to severe and last hours.

Cluster headache

A cluster headache causes severe stabbing sensations in or around one eye. The pain lasts a few minutes and recurs several times a day for weeks or months, and then goes away.

Medication overuse headache (MOH)

You may develop MOH from the overuse of medication to treat headache pain.

In addition to your head pain, these headaches may cause neck pain. Or, if you have a condition that affects your cervical spine (neck), such as spinal stenosis, you may have pain that radiates from your neck into your head.

What happens during an evaluation for headaches?

The team at AABP Integrative Pain Care takes a holistic approach to care and conducts a thorough exam when you come in for a headache evaluation. The team asks detailed questions about your symptoms, including location, type, and severity of your pain.

They review your medical history, usual diet, and daily routine. Your provider performs a physical exam and may request diagnostic tests, such as an X-ray, CT scan, or MRI to rule out medical conditions that might explain your ongoing head pain.

How are headaches treated?

Your pain management physician at AABP Integrative Pain Care customizes your headache treatment plan based on headache type, severity and frequency of symptoms, and your medical history.

Treatment for headaches may include:

  • Diet modification
  • Activity modification
  • Stress management
  • Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs)
